Moving Forward Together

First-Ever C-level Workshop on Sustainability

Over the past years, leaders in the cycling industry have developed a deeper understanding of the need to make sustainability an integral part of their businesses in order to thrive. The industry now stands at a pivotal moment, navigating ongoing market fluctuations while embracing more sustainable methods and materials for production, use, and end-of-life solutions.

Recognising the complexity of the challenges ahead - and that no individual company can tackle them alone - a group of 16 leaders from across the cycling sector came together for a 1.5-day workshop in February at the headquarters of Riese & Müller in Mühltal, Germany.

This interactive event, facilitated by Shift Cycling Culture, included a group bike ride, a factory tour and was driven by open and honest conversations, knowledge sharing, with a strong focus on collective action. During the interactive workshop, participants co-created ideas and defined clear actions to steer the cycling industry into a more resilient and sustainable future.

Collaboration for industry transformation

Key topics discussed included:

  • Intelligent use of data: Implementing smarter data usage and sharing to help companies improve processes, track progress, and make more sustainable decisions.

  • Standardisation: Developing common frameworks to increase efficiency and transparency across the industry.

  • Collaboration and Communication: Strengthening partnerships and improving communication with clear and impactful messaging towards consumers and other stakeholders.

Leadership commitment to sustainability

A central theme of the workshop was the importance of keeping sustainability at the core of business strategies. Meaningful progress requires not just top-level commitment but also the empowerment of teams and experts across organizations to champion and drive the sustainability agenda forward.

A call for broader participation

This event marked a significant milestone in strengthening industry connections and laid the groundwork for future collaboration. The active participation of diverse stakeholders was key to its success, highlighting the crucial need for different players to come together. As we move forward, we hope to welcome even more industry leaders and innovators to future events to collectively shape a more sustainable and resilient cycling industry.
